Building a fleet of robotic ships

MT Selected as Supplier for Fleet of 78-meter Armada robotic-ships

Ocean Infinity's fleet of innovative, low-emission ships is set to revolutionize the way we conduct business at sea. A major milestone has been achieved with the launch of the first ship and the start of sea trials.

Marine Technologies is honored to have been selected as the supplier of dynamic positioning, integrated bridge solutions, thruster controls, communications packages, and full sensor packages, including radar and gyros for this project.

In this video, Ocean Infinity's technology experts discuss how these ships will reduce environmental impacts and improve safety at sea for the maritime industry. It also covers the testing and commissioning already underway and what lies ahead. The ships were designed and built by VARD.

Marine Technologies' goal is to spearhead the development of the building blocks for the era of autonomous shipping. The Armada project is a strategic and important step where MT has overcome many new challenges, moving the boundaries to what can be achieved through collaboration.

Are you ready for the unmanned future?

Remote Control at your fingertips with MT Remote Control and C-Link

The world's first autonomous passenger ferry, developed in Trondheim, Norway, by NTNU, is in operation. By replacing expensive bridge and tunnel solutions, the technology can revolutionize urban public transportation.

MT Remote Control ensures safe and effective control of a ship's steering system, controlling vessels remotely from a workboat deck or as a backup control system for autonomous ferries. With MT Remote Control you can control multiple drones from a mothership. In combination with the C-Link 2-360, it has a range of 5 km.

MT's family of C-Link 15 wireless radios are designed for medium-range network constellations that link together a cluster of vessels, platforms and/or barges in a shared maritime or combined maritime/shore-side network. C-Link is certified and approved for real-time control systems.

Years ago, people were rowed from one place to another by raftsmen in cities such as Trondheim and Bergen, Norway. They served as the waterways' taxi drivers. Thanks to a forward-looking and innovative approach, water transport has once again become available in Trondheim, Norway.

MilliAmpere 2 has been running shuttle traffic across the channel in Trondheim since October. The new technology was available for anyone to test during the trial run, and researchers mapped the public's experiences.

NTNU Trondheim has developed the world's heaviest and largest professional environment in this niche through extensive investments in research and testing with business partners. This project is very important to Marine Technologies, and we are proud to be a part of it.

ABS Conducts First-Ever Remote DP/FMEA In Joint Effort with Edison Chouest Offshore and Marine Technologies

Remote Monitoring Center
ECO's Remote Monitoring Center in Cut Off, LA

April 6, 2020 — On Tuesday, March 24, ABS performed the first ever remote Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DP/FMEA) as part of completing the special survey of machinery utilizing Edison Chouest Offshore's state-of-the-art Remote Monitoring Center and CAT ISLAND platform supply vessel.

Chouest has the most advanced PSV fleet in the world, capable of providing remote troubleshooting and inspections. This reduces the need for technicians to travel to vessels, and supports social distancing, which is crucial in today's business to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). ABS and ECO used this opportunity to pilot this DP/FMEA survey.

These remote offerings also reduce emissions and improve efficiency for Chouest's clients by limiting business travel emissions to and from port locations.

ABS' Senior Surveyor Shawn Poulin and Surveyor Charlie Morrow operated from the Remote Monitoring Center for the event. "This was a unique experience and ABS plans to continue to work with Chouest and to use this process to execute remote surveys in future where possible," said Poulin.

Chouest's 312 class of PSVs have the features needed to make these remote surveys possible. These features on the 312 Class as well as ECO's RMC allow the execution of remote pilots with a key step on the road to Digital Class.

ABS conducts special surveys every five years. During the special survey, a full FMEA trial is carried out to evaluate processes and identify how they may fail and to assess the relative impact of different failures in order to identify the parts of the process that are most in need of change.

About ABS

ABS, a leading global provider of classification and technical advisory services to the marine and offshore industries, is committed to setting standards for safety and excellence in design and construction. Focused on safe and practical application of advanced technologies and digital solutions, ABS works with industry and clients to develop accurate and cost-effective compliance, optimized performance and operational efficiency for marine and offshore assets.

About the Remote Monitoring Center

Located at ECO's corporate headquarters in Cut Off, LA the Remote Monitoring Center (RMC) sets Chouest apart with its unique ability to remotely monitor vessel and cargo movement throughout the fleet. The RMC was created through a collaboration between several ECO affiliates, including Marine Technologies, and allows for real-time monitoring of vessel systems.

Chouest's 312 series of platform supply vessels and newer vessels within their fleet are remotely monitored 24/7 with over 4,000 data points per vessel. The entire Chouest fleet as a whole monitors around 300,000 data points every 10 seconds. This information is used to highlight concerns, prevent failures and eliminate downtime.
